XCEL ENERGY FOUNDATION GRANTS
$3,000 FOR STEM SCHOLARSHIPS
LEVELLAND – Three South Plains College engineering and computer science students are benefitting from a $3,000 scholarship grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation this spring semester.
The grant was awarded to the South Plains College Foundation to support student achievement and completion in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.
"STEM scholarships are a blessing for Math, Computer Science and Engineering students,” said Shirley Davis, associate professor of mathematics at SPC. “As we live in a world of technology and its daily advancements, STEM majors are in high growing demand, and it's comforting to know that the community supports and encourages STEM majors by renewing scholarships such as the XCEL scholarship in addendum to the preexisting STEM scholarships that have financially nurtured our students over the years.”
The grant to South Plains College has provided $1,000 scholarships to three students who are studying pre-engineering or computer science for the 2019-20 academic year.
Students who have awarded the scholarships include John Covarubio, a sophomore computer science major from Lubbock; Emmanuel Meremikwu, a sophomore computer science major from Grand Prairie; and Hamzah Alnaser, a freshman pre-engineering major from Jordan.
“We are very grateful for the continued scholarship support that Xcel Energy has provided South Plains College students,” said Dr. Robin Satterwhite, president of South Plains College. “SPC has an outstanding math and pre-engineering program with strong transfer pathways to computer science and electrical engineering programs at our regional and state universities. Encouraging more students to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math through scholarships will benefit business and industry in the future.”
Since 2007, the Xcel Energy Foundation has provided $66,500 to the South Plains College Foundation to fund scholarships for various programs.
