SPC Upward Bound students to host jazz concert on July 2
LEVELLAND – High school students a part of South Plains College’s Upward Bound program will perform in the jazz concert Upward Bound: Ripples of Sound from 7 to 8 p.m. on July 2 at the Tom T. Hall Production Studio in the Creative Arts Building on the Levelland campus. This student-organized concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will consist of six original songs performed by the students. A surprise performer is also set to appear at the event.
“We all came up with the lyrics, learned the pieces and learned how to play the instruments all within the span of a couple of weeks,” Daisy Perez, an incoming high school junior from Levelland, said.
In the Upward Bound performance class, students learn more than just music production and concert execution.
“You also learn a lot about jazz artists back in the day,” Lincoln Keesler, an incoming high school sophomore from Sundown, said. “During the whole month of June, we learned the history of jazz.”
Madelis Romero, an incoming high school senior from Levelland, said there is more to producing music than she expected before attending the class.
“It is a fun class that allows for a lot of hands-on learning, she said.
