DeMerritt named Vice President for Student Affairs
LEVELLAND – Dr. Stan DeMerritt, dean of students at South Plains College, has been named vice president for student affairs.
Dr. DeMerritt joined the SPC administration on Nov. 16, 2016 as the dean of students.
“We are excited about Dr. DeMerritt assuming the role of vice president for student affairs at South Plains College,” said Dr. Robin Satterwhite, president of South Plains College. “Dr. DeMerritt has a strong background in academic and student services and has performed exceptionally as the dean of students during his time at SPC. I believe he has the talents and commitment to build upon the student affairs division of the college.”
Dr. DeMerritt spent 20 years at Wayland University where he served as the institution’s associate academic vice president, university registrar, associate registrar, veteran affairs certifying official and coordinator of external campus registration.
“It is a true honor to have this opportunity to assist South Plains College with student affairs,” Dr. DeMerritt said. “I look forward to working with student and employees in a collaborate effort to increase retention and completion rates at SPC in order to improve each student’s life.”
Dr. DeMerritt was born in Kimball, Neb. He graduated from Artesia (N.M.) High School in 1987, N.M. He received an associate of arts in pre-business degree in 1992 from New Mexico State University. He then transferred to Wayland University in Plainview where he received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration and religion in 1995 and a master’s degree in business education in 1998. He obtained a doctor of philosophy in higher education administration at Texas Tech University in 2011.
Dr. DeMerritt accepted the position of associate registrar at Wayland University in 1996. Three years later, he became the registrar. In 2006, Dr. DeMerritt was promoted to the associate academic vice president position. During his time at Wayland, Dr. DeMerritt is credited with implementing an accountability system for advisors and evaluators to ensure accuracy and continuity. He guided a steering committee in the development and implementation process to re-engineer official degree plans for the undergraduate academic records office. He led in the development and adoption of the university employee core competencies and supervisor core competencies. He also helped develop the University Staff Handbook. During 2013-2014, he led the Wayland in the successful completion of the five-year compliance review with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Dr. DeMerritt is a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers where he served on the board of directors as vice president for finance, Registrar 201 Workshop development group and presenter as well as a member of the Annual Program Committee. He also served in various leadership positions for the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Dr. DeMerritt and his wife, Jean, are the parents of two children. Son, Samuel works at DuPont Pioneer Hybrid Seed in Plainview and daughter Leigh Ann is a sophomore biology major and environmental science minor at Wayland University. Jean is an eighth-grade English-language arts teacher at Levelland Middle School.
