SPC to offer Fall 2024 basic phlebotomy course starting Sept. 9
LEVELLAND – South Plains College’s Fall 2024 basic phlebotomy course (PLAB 1023) will start on Sept. 9. Enrollment is limited to 10 students.
Classroom instruction will take place 12 times from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 124 of the Technical Arts Building on the Levelland campus. Clinical instruction will take place from 8 a.m. to noon or 1 to 5 p.m. at a Lubbock hospital depending on the available clinical space.
Tuition is $600, and the required textbook is the fourth or fifth edition of The Complete Textbook of Phlebotomy by Lynn B. Hoeltke. Georgia Mulloy will be the course instructor.
Students must provide proof of immunization for MMR, Tetanus no older than 8 years, Hepatitis B Series, Varicella (chicken pox), flu shot and have a current negative TB test no older than 12 months. Students must be at least 18 years old and provide photo identification and a social security card. A criminal background check will be performed on all students.
Students will learn various blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. These techniques and tools include vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles/blood culture and specimen collection on adults, children and infants.
The course focuses on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics and medical terminology. Additional clinical assignments are required to complete ASPT pre-certification requirements.
Students who satisfactorily complete the course will receive a certificate for 6.0 Continuing Education Units for 60 contact hours of instruction. Students must complete 50 sticks to earn the certificate.
