"Exorcism"

Scares the Devil Out of Audiences

Tim Deleon, staff writer

Sleeping in her dorm at the University of Minnesota, Emily Rose is awakened by the smell of smoke.

Like anyone who would smell this, she got up and started looking around. Not finding anything, she returned to her room and tried to go back to sleep. Before she could get comfortable, she admits to there being an invisible entity that got on her bed and forced its way into her body. She claims to be invaded by a demonic force.

After this event occurred, her body started showing signs of epilepsy and other sicknesses related to it. Because of this, this case of a possession was discounted by the Catholic church as a true possession. They recognized it as someone walking away from her medication who had to deal with her situation.

After her death, many questions remained about Emily and why she died. People of higher stature claim that there was something medically wrong with her(epilepsy). Father Richard Moore (Tom Wilkenson-“Rush Hour”. “The Patriot”) thought different. He claims that Emily, played by Jennifer Carpenter, was in fact possessed.

Because Father Moore thought that she was in fact possessed, he decided to take Emily off of the  medication, which resulted in her death The court blamed the death of Rose on him. He was arrested and taken to court to stand trial. Defending him in this crucial trial is his attorney Erin Bruner, played by Laura Linney- “The Mothman Prophecies”). From the court room, the movie begins.

“The Exorcism of Emily Rose” is recognized as a true demonic possession because it is one of the rare files that went to court about matters portraying an actual possession. The reason why it went to court is because doctors put her on medication, and her exorcist, Father Moore, took her off it because he thought this was a true demonic possession and there are no injections against the devil.

This movie is nothing compared to “The Exorcist”, if you like “Law and Order” or TV shows like that, you will love to hate “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”. Love it because it’s a great movie; hate it because it scares the living heck out of you.

Directing the film is Scott Derrickson, who previously worked with movies such as “Darkness Falling”, and “The Church of the Holy Ghost.” This is Derrickson’s first movie to direct, and I might say he did well. This is a must-see movie that you cannot watch alone.  If you do, you will regret it.

Tim’s Rating: 4-out-of-5 for a really scary movie and being a really scary movie!!
