ADMISSION TO HEALTH OCCUPATIONS PROGRAMS In addition to the general admission requirements for South Plains College, students enrolling Health Information Services, Associate Degree Nursing (RN), Vocational Nursing, Surgical Technology, Surgical Assisting, Respiratory Care, Radiologic Technology, and Emergency Medical Services programs must meet additional admissions criteria. Students who are seeking admission to the Associate Degree Nursing, Surgical Technology and Vocational Nursing programs must also complete a pre-admission test as part of the selection process. Information about the admission requirements of specific programs are found in the SPC General Catalog or online. It is very important to contact the recruiter or program director to obtain information necessary for program admission. Admission to South Plains College does not guarantee admission to a health occupations program. ADVISORY COMMITTEES Minimum competency levels for graduation have been established for all programs in the Health Occupations Division. These competency levels have been approved by program advisory committees comprised of employers and representatives from the professional medical community and accrediting bodies. These advisory committees assist program faculty in keeping curricula and courses up-to-date with the demands of the professions. JOB PLACEMENT South Plains College is committed to assuring graduates of health occupations programs continued success in chosen career fields. SPC placement counselors, program faculty and clinical supervisors provide job placement services to help you find employment after program completion. Students in the division's various programs work in clinical settings as part of the learning experience. These work experiences put you in contact with future employers. PROGRAM FACULTY Faculty in the Health Occupations Division are highly-qualified professionals who hold registry and certification in their teaching specialty areas. Full and part-time faculty have held a variety of positions in the health care industry and bring this work experience to the classroom and clinical setting. Moreover, SPC faculty members are committed to teaching and to student success. These professionals not only serve as your teacher but as a professional mentor, as well. CLINICAL AFFILIATIONS AND EXPERIENCES The Health Occupations Division maintains 59 clinical affiliations in hospitals, clinics, physician's offices, K-12 public schools, the TTU Health Sciences Center, health department, home health care agencies, psychiatric facilities, mental health clinics, state school, nursing homes, and assisted-care facilities. Students have the opportunity to practice under the direction of the program faculty, designated supervisors and preceptors as they learn about their profession during on-site education opportunities. INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES Programs and courses offered through the Health Occupations Division are many times demanding and challenging. Most courses are math and science-based and sometimes require additional study and tutoring assistance. Students can find these support services from the Center for Teaching and Learning on the SPC Levelland Campus and the Student Academic Center at the SPC Reese Center. Free tutoring is offered for selected courses. Additionally, individual programs maintain study labs and computerized instructional materials designed to support and supplement classroom activities. FINANCIAL AID South Plains College maintains a full-service Student Financial Aid Office that assists students in obtaining financial assistance based on documented financial need. Health Occupations students may apply for grants such as the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, the Texas Grant and the Texas Public Education Grant. With the current shortage of health care workers in several professions there are often other grants available once admitted to the program. Federal Loan Programs are also available for those who qualify. For more information, follow the link below. SCHOLARSHIPS The Health Occupations Division is fortunate to be the beneficiary of a number of scholarship programs that are provided by the South Plains College Foundation. Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic achievement, character, and leadership qualities. To be considered for general college scholarships, students must complete and submit a Scholarship Application by the March 1 deadline. Some program scholarships are available only after acceptance into the specific program. Application deadlines vary for these kinds of scholarships. The program directors notify students of available scholarships as funds become available. For more information, follow the link below.
